Townsville 2006
The project, Mathematics content and pedagogy for Indigenous students in the Townsville district, was funded by a federal ASISTM grant. The project's focus is the mathematics associated with arithmetic and algebra, as the transition is made between the two from early primary into junior secondary. The start and finish dates were January 2006 and December 2006 respectively.
This section presents the outcomes of a 2006 ASISTM research and professional development (PD) project in Townsville to enhance the mathematics performance of Indigenous students.
The project involved seven schools in the Townsville region in collaboration with the Townsville Catholic Education Office (TCEO), Independent Schools of Queensland (ISQ) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
Our approach is based on our beliefs and aims.
The projects presented in this website was founded on a belief that Indigenous students have the ability to succeed in mathematics if:
- it is taught, as it should be to all students, through pattern and structure;
- expectations are high;
- it is embedded in a wider program that builds pride in:
- Indigenality per se; and,
- in Indigenous students as successful mathematics learners.
The aims of the ASISTM projects presented in these web pages were to:
- improve teachers', teacher aides' and tutors' mathematics content and pedagogy knowledge;
- improve school culture with respect to mathematics, particularly with respect to teachers', teacher aides' and tutors' expectations of Indigenous students' ability to learn mathematics;
- develop effective and innovative school-based mathematics teaching programs and materials for Indigenous students at all levels of mathematics; and,
- enhance Indigenous students'mathematics learning outcomes in participating schools.
The plan was to take the findings of the project and produce resources all schools could use. These included: (a) a report collating all materials developed for the project by the QUT researchers; (b) a collection of classroom ASISTM Townsville - PD materials developed by teachers, teacher aides and tutors and enhanced and collated by the QUT researchers on arithmetic and algebra; and (c) a series of papers and presentations in journals and conferences. All proposed materials are to be found on this website hosted by the oz-Teachernet.
