The Deadly Maths project, Developing Skills to Teach Remote Indigenous Students in the Basic Number Understandings, was funded by a federal ASISTM grant.

It was identified as one of 16 ASISTM projects selected to be broadly representative of exemplars in innovation.

The project was conducted in seven schools in the Mt Isa region in 2006-2007. The specific outcomes hoped to be achieved from the project are:

(1) enhanced mathematics learning outcomes for the Indigenous students;

(2) improved mathematics learning support skills for the Indigenous teacher aides; and

(3) improved mathematics teaching skills with respect to Indigenous students for the teachers.



In doing this, it is also hoped to develop:

(1) a package (and website) of teaching materials effective in supporting mathematics learning for Indigenous students; and

(2) a package of professional learning materials for training teachers and aides in effective methods to teach mathematics to Indigenous students.



It is hoped that the training of the Indigenous teacher aides and the packages of materials will enable improvements in mathematics learning outcomes to be; (a) sustained long term within the schools and their communities; and (b) spread to other Indigenous schools through the dissemination of the packages across Australia. The trained teacher aides will certainly be a long term mathematics learning resource for the Indigenous communities as will the students with improved mathematics outcomes.

Overall, It is hoped that the initiative will empower teachers, teacher aides and Indigenous students and Indigenous communities and schools across Australia with regard to mathematics outcomes.
